The Difference Between Working Out and Performance Enhancement

In regards to what I’m about to talk about, I was a guilty as everyone else. I’d just finished another tough season on the field and it was time to get back into the gym. Off-season training was here. That was how you made sure you came out better than your opponents for next year. I’d lift harder, run longer, and train more often year in and year out. My goal was to get bigger, stronger, and build up my endurance. And you know what? That’s exactly what I did. I have never had any trouble achieving my goals in the gym. My lean mass always went up, my strength was always very high, and I had a very high endurance. But here was the problem… It didn’t exactly translate back to the field. Yes, I did get better each year, but not as much as I should have with the amount of work I put into it. So what was the problem?

As I said before, I always had success with the programs that I put myself through. BUT I WAS PUTTING MYSELF THROUGH THE WRONG PROGRAMS! Just walking through the gym today I see the exact same mistakes being made by almost every single other athlete in the gym. Yes, strength and size does help increase athleticism, but there is much more to it than that. Your program needs to be designed specifically for your sport. Off-season training should have strict components that address all the needs of a specific athlete. Strength and endurance are extremely broad and generic areas of training. They are just the stepping stones to the rest of the program.

Speed, agility, and quickness are another area. Hand-eye coordination needs to be addressed. Reaction times need to improve. Explosiveness is another major area of athleticism. The list goes on and on. Looking back and analyzing the programs I used to go through, and the programs 90% of the other athletes that I see working out, it is easy to see why my performance wasn’t absolutely maximized as well as it should have been.

But that is the beauty of learning from someone else’s missteps! Take advantage of what you’re learning here. As a Performance Enhancement Specialist, I have learned the tools that professional athletes use to improve their skills in every sport, and that is how I truly learned the difference between working out and performance enhancement. Working out can be anything you do in the gym to get your sweat on and improve your health. Performance Enhancement is much more specialized than that. It is specific. It addresses every need. It ensures that you come out much better each season. Use your passion intelligently. Don’t just go through the motions. Design a Performance Enhancement program and take your abilities to the next level. If you don’t know how, contact us!
